Barça, Valencia or Betis were a few of the destinations in the 16-17 season.

Trials are an opening to any football club. These “football exams” – of which we talk about carefully in this article: ‘How can I tryout for a big club?’ – are more intense towards the end of a season, when the coaches are looking for reinforcements to improve their squads and cover possible shortages.

For students at Marcet’s High Performance Academy, it’s a natural high point in their development process and a unique opportunity to get into the professional side of football. Out of all the students, more than 30 were selected for trials in the 16-17 season, as shown in the following chart:

The players that stood out the most throughout the year at Marcet, were able to join up with some big national clubs like FC Barcelona, Valencia CF or Real Betis Balompié amongst others. Others tried it out with clubs outside of Spain like the Portuguese side Gil Vicente FC, the Mexican outfit CF Pachuca or the Turkish giants Galatasaray. They all got the chance to leave their mark and start their professional careers.

How did they get the chance to do a tryout? With effort, perseverance and sacrifice, and also thanks to a network of contacts and institutional relationships that connect Marcet with clubs and scouts from around the globe. In order for a talent to be picked out, there needs to be someone with the means to put them in the shop window.

What sort of players are professional clubs interested in? Which positions are in high demand? The article ‘Searching for a defence’ answers all the questions above and gives pointers on knowing how the picking process works in professional football. Also how to get foot in the door for those who dream about being part of the football world.
