Álvaro Jiménez debuts at Sporting de Gijón, where the team’s passionate following have made him feel right at home.

Álvaro Jiménez‘s transfer to Sporting de Gijón has been hot news on the transfer market this past summer. At the beginning of August, the former Marcet trainee seemed like he’d be calling Malaga home. He had passed the team’s medical examination but soon found out that Getafe would yield his place to Sporting.

According to several specialized media reports, Málaga was not able to sign the Cordovan winger right away because his salary cap exceeded that allowed by LaLiga. That is to say that the Andalusian club needed to manage overheads before being able to sign Álvaro, regardless. Therefore he asked for patience since the agreement with Getafe was definitive. But then Sporting came to the table with a better offer and left with the young athlete under their wing.

Álvaro José Jiménez Guerrero was born in Córdoba in 1995. From 2003 to 2010 he grew up playing for his city’s main team but had his sights set on more. That’s why in the summer of 2007 he began to attend Marcet’s intensive courses. Three years pass and the forward signs for Real Madrid‘s Cadete A team, where he would stay for several seasons, until he became RM Castilla‘s top assistant in 2015-16, with nine goal passes.

Having achieved a promotion to First Division after playing 37 games, Malaga then decided then to buy him for a figure close to one million euros. A figure that Álvaro still stands on today after having moved to Sporting de Gijón.

“I’d never been in a city that was so involved with its team. People already give me words of encouragement”

At 23 years old, Álvaro still has a long way to go on the pitch concerning his career. Last year, a knee injury took him off the grass from January to March, so he didn’t get as much action as he would have liked.

Now he says that his new teammates and the club’s fans are really helping him: “I’d never been in a city that was so involved with its team, I’d only been in Gijón for a couple of days when people already started approaching me on the street, saying hello and giving me words of encouragement. Everything has exceeded my expectations. ”
