European Champion with Spain, Arsenal’s Champions League starter and World Cup debutant in Qatar 2022: David Raya’s journey, forged at Marcet
Few paths to the top of professional football are straightforward, and David Raya’s certainly wasn’t. From his early days to becoming Euro 2024 champion, a Qatar World Cup squad member, and the starting goalkeeper at Arsenal, his story is defined by determination, tactical intelligence, and an innate ability to anticipate every play. At Marcet, he found the perfect place to refine his skills and build the mindset of an elite goalkeeper.
Shining for the Spanish National Team
Raya’s outstanding performances in English football earned him his first call-up to the Spanish National Team under Luis Enrique in March 2022. He debuted against Albania, playing all 90 minutes at the RCDE Stadium.
He was also part of the squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, gaining invaluable experience despite not featuring in any matches. In 2023, he helped the team win the UEFA Nations League, and one year later, he lifted the Euro 2024 trophy with La Roja.
Raya’s big moment came in that Euros campaign, playing the third group-stage match against Albania. He secured a 0-1 win for Spain with several key saves and preserved their unbeaten group record. “David Raya proved he was ready for the big stage, shining when all eyes were on Albania,” praised the sports media.

His consistency for both Arsenal and Spain shows he is more than up to the challenge. In a team rebuilding its identity, Raya has earned his place through hard work and reliability, becoming a key figure inside and outside the penalty area.
The Road to the Top
After his time at Marcet, Raya continued his development at Cornellà, a club known for nurturing young talent. His performances caught the eye of the Blackburn Rovers, who signed him in 2012. There, he began adapting to English football’s pace and aerial intensity.

He was loaned to Southport in search of minutes, gaining his first professional experience. He returned to Blackburn and became a regular starter, proving his worth in high-pressure matches. His growth earned him a move to Brentford in 2019, where he played a key role in the team’s historic promotion to the Premier League.
In 2023, Arsenal brought him in on loan, and he quickly claimed the starting spot. He made his Champions League debut and impressed the club enough to trigger his buyout clause and make the move permanent.
A Goalkeeper Who Commands His Area
Over time, Raya has become known for his reflexes, leadership, and ability to command the box. His game reading and anticipation make him a reliable presence in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Though not the tallest keeper in the league, Raya compensates with speed, explosiveness, and top-tier technique. His sharp reactions and footwork make him extremely hard to beat, while his passing ability has become vital in modern build-up play.

Competitive Mentality and Drive to Grow
What truly sets Raya apart is his mentality. From a young age, he stood out for his competitive drive and desire to grow. That attitude has fueled his career at every step.

From Marcet to Professional Football
David Raya arrived at Marcet determined to sharpen his game. He developed key technical aspects through the Advanced Goalkeeper Program, combining practical training with video analysis to fix mistakes and improve positioning and reaction time.
“The qualities he had back then are the same ones that brought him to the top. His work ethic and hunger to improve were clear from day one,” recalls Jorge Coihuin, goalkeeper coach at Marcet.
During his time at the academy, Raya also attended camps focused on decision-making, aerial control, and tactical intelligence. His discipline and competitive mindset stood out in every session—traits that would serve him well as he moved into the pro ranks.
“We’re proud to have played a small role in his journey. Seeing him succeed at the top level is incredibly rewarding,” Coihuin adds.
Raya’s story shows that success in football requires more than talent. It takes resilience, hard work, and an unshakable mindset. From his first steps to becoming a European champion and Arsenal’s No. 1, his journey is a testament to perseverance and dedication.
